After my stay at distant relatives I have to say that aside from the eco lodge itself the kitchen takes on all the competition in the region and beats them down with a relish (and a dab of their homemade garlic chilli on the side) Grabbing a hangover sandwich in the morning is just perfect. A traditional bacon and egg sandwich on fresh bread assembled to your specifications. Like your bacon extra crispy? You've got it! Like a runny yolk, well ask for one. It's not an assembly line kitchen churning a la fast food joints. Each meal I'd handcrafted carefully by their kitchen team. The Chicken Penne Pesto makes for a stellar light lunch. The chef doesn't drown every flavour out with pesto (in some restaurants you feel like you might as well ordered a jar of pesto and a teaspoon) Their Beef Fillet or 'Steak Au Poivre' is by far my favourite dish on their menu. The fillet is tender (you don't need some machete to go through this beef trust me) and cooked to perfection. I love mine medium rare which around Kenya sometimes means rare or medium but here it's always just right, warm and pink in the center and lightly seared on the outside. The addition of red wine or mushroom sauce only makes this meal all the more better with a side of creamy, fluffy mashed potatoes. If you're in kilifi and looking for anything ranging from a snack to a main course pass by DR and make sure you order a Kilifi Dawa as well. PS if your ordering a plate of fries be careful, their portions are DELIGHTFULLY generous.
